A Bedroom Design Guide

— by Sealy on Oct 25, 2024

Our bedrooms are often a reflection of who we are. They should be your corner of the world where you can relax, recharge, and rest for the days ahead while also showcasing your personal style. Whether you’re looking for a bedroom refresh or a complete overhaul, here are some tips and tricks to consider when decorating your space.

Find your Inspiration
You may have an idea of what design styles speak to you, but arranging from scratch can be overwhelming. Start by constructing a mood board, either physical or digital, to help make sense of your vision. Take note of colors, patterns, and pieces you gravitate towards. Study the inspiration photos while surveying your room to see what will work and what won’t.

Build Around Your Current Furnishings
Re-doing the bedroom doesn’t have to mean tossing your current items. You can design a mature setting while hanging on to your childhood stuffed animals or turn your old dresser into a refurbished piece of art. Look at the items you own that may be considered staple pieces; which is your prized possession, and which are you dying to purge? Make your most interesting pieces the ones you work with and go from there. Keeping the less treasured could be a waste of space and a distraction to the style you’re going for, though some things simply can’t be parted with. For these items, incorporate storage and swap them out seasonally for a yearly refresh without having to purchase new ones.

Make Your Bed the Main Point
We call it the bedroom for a reason, so take advantage of it! Some of us may have a knack for going above and beyond for this room’s design, but overdoing it could disrupt your peace. The bed should be the focal point, so make sure to treat it as such, and don’t neglect your personal needs in the process (functionality can still be stylish). Pair your setup with bedside tables to pull the space together and avoid clutter in the surrounding areas. Instead, opt for tables with storage where you can put away items not in use. Try a large canvas, tapestry, or mural above your headboard for simple yet eye-catching decor. Be sure to give your mattress and bedframe the attention they deserve in this process. Is your current choice too stiff or soft for your preference? Does the headboard provide support and speak to your design choices?

Get Creative
Minimalists and maximalists alike can agree that their displays need finishing touches. Have fun with the unoccupied areas, and plan how you can add to them. Consider hanging lights to add dimension, painting an accent wall for more flair, or hanging intricate curtains to top things off. Sketch or map out your wall art before using nails or screws to visualize where certain pictures may fit and how.

Choose Comfort
Above all, aim to create a comforting environment where you’ll be happy to wind down. The last thing we want at bedtime is overstimulation, and your room can play a huge role in how you feel. Desks, work supplies, and electronics are items that experts suggest keeping out of your room due to the brain’s association with productivity.^ Emphasize bringing in items that promote relaxation, like floor pillows, cushiony chairs, plants, soft lights, books, or a sound machine. If you have the space, utilize comfortable corners of the room to create an area to rest other than your bed. Lastly, never forget the importance of a great mattress and the accessories to go with it. After all, resting in bed is the ultimate reward after your hard work with redecorating!
